Hurricane shelter to Wise shelter
Another short day. We got an early start with a mile climb to warm up, then it kind of went down hill. CLE is still struggling with the climbs. I keep telling him it’s because he’s lived his life in Northern Ohio and since there aren’t any hills there, his body is steric to up hills. Today, we planned a long day with a bail out point at 11 miles if needed, and we needed it. CLE took a header into a creek and twisted his ankle. Since we were only a few tenths of a mile to our bail out point we decided we were done for the day. In addition to the injury, it was raining so it wasn’t all bad. During our hike, today, we did enter the Graceland Highlands which is Virginia’s answer to an alpine environment What’s really special about the area is that it’s populated with wild ponies and long horn cattle. We managed to get close to some ponies with little ones.
Tomorrow is more climbing, but we’re planning our shortest day yet so with luck we can keep on schedule. Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to make up some of the distance lost.
Here’s Whistler signing off, with hopes of a more productive day to come.
